Plans to demolish office building in Newington for student flats unsupportable

-

I agree with the Cockburn Association - the area is in danger of losing its character with yet another student building.

A lot of history attached to this property. in the early 1900s it was the home of The Causewayside Lad's Institute, a means of keeping young kids off the streets and giving them something creative to do with their time. It was also used to launch the Boy Scouts movement, becoming the first ever troop in Scotland.

Surely even an architect student can see the historic structure has merit and how it can be used sensitively in any future development.

Demolition is the option of lazy, over-paid, egotistical architects, who shine their awards with their pants! Many projects have reused the carriage doors to access behind historical structures, sensitively re-imagining what is possible, when the solution is not drawn on the back of a pub beer mat. Even one-storey warehouses take on new possibilities. Often simply removing a roof (saving roof trusses for other use) and dropping in a wooden prefabricated structure.

How much student accommodation does Edinburgh require? Ian Ross

If it can't be converted to student flats, then please leave it undemolished. Glyn Ednie

If you object, then file your objection on the planning portal. Objecting here won’t stop the development. You have to make your objection count. So make an effort, find the planning application with Edinburgh Council and object where it counts.

Far too nice a building to be demolished. This building can easily be repurposed.

What about the homeless people with kids and disabled people? I think there are too many student flats in Edinburgh.

I totally agree with the Cockburn Association. Ruth Townsley

Why knock down a building with character, is it not listed? Olive Aitken

Who is going to be responsible for the upkeep of the building? Maybe the Cockburn Association. Why not student accommodation, they contribute to the city? Fred Kinghorn

Council planning is now being dictated to by the university, being the biggest landowner in Edinburgh. Most objections are overruled by the Scottish Government. Why have local councils?
