Fiasco (Netflix, from April 30)
If your idea of French comedy begins and ends with Jacques Tati, brace yourself for a pleasant surprise. Fiasco recently premiered at the Canneseries festival, and is now heading to a small screen near you. It’s the brainchild of writer and director Igor Gotesman, who co-wrote the scripts with the production’s star, Pierre Niney (Gotesman also has a supporting role). Niney plays Raphael Valande, a fledgling film-maker about to start shooting his first movie, an ambitious ‘down the ages’ adventure that covers prehistory to the D-Day landings. However, it soon turns into a nightmare thanks to a member of his crew who seems determined to sabotage the entire project. Francois Civil, who previously worked with Gotesman and Niney on the hit comedy Five, also appears, alongside Vincent Cassel.
Acapulco (Apple TV+, from May 1)
Inspired by the 2017 Mexican-American comedy film How to be a Latin Lover, this sitcom, executive produced by and starring Eugenio Derbez, continues the story of Maximo Gallardo Ramos, a successful Malibu-based mogul who has a rags-to-riches story. Derbez plays Maximo in the present day, with Erick Saldana and Enrique Arrizon as the same character at earlier stages in his life. As the third series begins, an older Maximo returns to the Las Colinas Resort, where he embarked on his meteoric rise, but no longer recognises the place that played such an important role in his life. Meanwhile, in 1985, the young Maximo’s thirst for success could come at the cost of some very important relationships.
A Man in Full (Netflix, from May 2)
Jeff Daniels has enjoyed a long and very varied career, appearing in lowbrow comedies such as Dumb and Dumber, and highbrow TV work, including Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom, as well as pretty much everything else in-between. Most recently he’s been on the small screen in American Rust, and now he’s back with another series, this time based on Tom Wolfe’s novel of the same name. Created by David E Kelley of Ally McBeal and Big Little Lies fame, it focuses on Charlie Croker (Daniels), an Arizona real estate mogul whose once successful business is facing bankruptcy. Charlie desperately attempts to protect everything he’s worked for as the vultures begin to circle… Diane Lane, Lucy Liu, Aml Ameen and Bill Camp co-star.
