Camden (Disney+, from May 22) If one were to devise a points system for ‘cool’, then Camden in central
London would probably score more per square foot than almost anywhere else on the planet. For such a small part of the capital, a huge number of music artists have sprung up from the suburb – whether they grew up there or relocated to be at the centre of the scene. This documentary series hears from the likes of Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Little Simz, Nile Rodgers, Boy George, Yungblud and Dua Lipa, the latter of whom is also an executive producer of the series. Among other contributors to later episodes are acts as diverse as Mark Ronson (who worked extensively with one of the borough’s most famous residents, Amy Winehouse), Questlove, Black Eyed Peas, Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B, Chuck D and Sister Bliss from Faithless.
The Veil (Disney+, from May 22) Fans of Killing Eve may well be tempted by this new international spy thriller series, a tense and twisty tale that explores the relationship between two women – one with a secret, and the other determined to reveal it – as they travel from Istanbul to Paris and London. The two leads, Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Yumna Marwan (Little Birds), are fantastic, displaying a real subtlety in the ways in which enemies come to understand and respect one another as well as fear them. There are potentially thousands of lives at risk, however, which makes this game of cat and mouse a high-stakes one indeed. Mission controllers from the CIA, MI6 and the French DGSE can only look on as it plays out before them.
Geek Girl (Netflix, from May 23) Based on the 2013 young adult novel of the same name by Holly Smale, Geek Girl stars Emily Carey as Harriett, the titular awkward teenage girl who longs to fit in at school but, as a neurodivergent and clumsy teen, finds popularity hard to come by. However one day she is scouted by a top London model agent and her luck begins to change. Balancing the two contrasting worlds of high fashion and high school prove tricky, however, but ultimately lead her on a journey of self-discovery – and teach her that, despite her desire to fit in, some people are just destined to stand out. This promising coming-of-age story also stars Sarah Parish (Bancroft), Tim Downie (Baldur’s Gate 3) and Jemima Rooper (The Inheritance).
