Stipa tenuissima

EDP Norfolk - - Gardening -

For me this is one of the most graceful of ornamental grasses. Growing to around 60cm tall, it has thin, bright green leaves, then in summer produces soft white, feathery blooms which sway elegantly in the slightest breeze. These turn a buff colour with age and look fantastic this time of year, glistening in the morning dew or with a covering of frost. Grow in full sun or partial shade and in reasonably well-drained soil as they resent too much wet in winter. Old foliage can be removed by raking through in spring and, although it self-seeds freely, any unwanted plants are easily removed.
