The University of East Anglia, Earlham Road, Norwich

When was it built? The new gateway building to the University of East Anglia campus was opened in 2015. What was it built for? The concept is a green business hub, for entrepreneurs, innovators and businesses committed to building a low carbon future. There is also space for exhibitions and conferences, a roof-top terrace, 300-seat lecture theatre, and a boardroom with beautiful views over Earlham Park. It’s special because... It has been called the greenest commercial building in Britain and has won awards for its architecture and environmental credentials. It combines natural and recycled materials with cutting edge construction techniques. There are walls made of thatch and the university’s recycled 1960 lab benches, and other materials include recycled local oak, reed, clay, nettle, hemp and flint. What’s it like working here? Michael Stiff, from Michael Stiff Animation, is one of around 70 people, from 40 different businesses, who work in the building. He says: “The Enterprise Centre is a fantastic building to work in. The growing business eco-system here means that the variety of business based in the building is growing rapidly. Friendships and relationships between these businesses are really starting to create a brilliant environment for all the business based here to grow.”
