Losing dead skin is a great way to regenerate a healthy, smooth look says BIJAN BEIGI
Treatments to tackle problem skin
Superficial peels are easy to apply and the time needed for healing is minimal
AS WE get older our skin can gradually appear dull and lifeless. This can be caused by dead skin cells that accumulate and block pores. However, chemical peels can help.
By removing the dead cells from the surface of the skin the peel enables new healthy cells to grow back, creating smoother looking skin and evening out tone. Chemical peels can also be used to treat blemishes, scars and age spots.
There are various types of chemical peel – superficial, medium and deep – and they achieve different results. So if you are considering this treatment, it is important to know what your options are…
Superficial peels are easy to apply and the time needed for healing is minimal. During this treatment the skin cells are removed from the top layer of skin (epidermis) and the chemical is only left on the skin for a few minutes.
The skin may feel tight for a couple of hours afterwards but the effects are not long-lasting or dramatic and regular treatment may be needed to maintain the results. During a medium peel the skin cells are removed from the top and middle layers of skin by the chemical, which is left on the skin for a few minutes.
A burning or stinging sensation may be felt when the peel is applied and the skin may go brown or red in the days afterwards; it can take up to six weeks for the skin to return to normal and treatment is needed every 6 to 12 months to maintain the effects. However, medium peels can achieve more dramatic and long-lasting results for blemishes, fine lines and facial scarring and a deep peel will help reduce more severe facial wrinkles.
The deeper peel is a medical procedure during which a local anaesthetic and sedative may be needed and your heart and blood pressure need to be monitored. The treatment affects deeper layers of skin and some peeling, swelling and discomfort may be felt for a few days afterwards. Skin redness can last up to three months. However the results of the deeper peel are dramatic and this one-off treatment has lasting effects, so doesn’t usually need to be repeated
