AS trends come and go, strong, classic looks never go out of style. A slim-fit shirt paired with a tailored jacket and well-cut jeans can get you a long way. And when it comes to a true look that lasts, it’s about finding quality clothes that make you feel your best.

Darren and Paul Hoggett - owners of J&B Menswear on Magdalen Road, Norwich - are passionate about providing up-to-the-minute styles, while maintaining a classic look. By using strong, English heritage brands, combined with expert local knowledge, Darren says they can offer quality pieces that suit every age and style.

“The market has gone much more premium, it’s the way to go,” says Darren. “People want better items that last.”

As an independent business, Darren says he evolves the store’s style with current trends, keeping everything cutting-edge and always one step ahead.

“We’re unique, there’s nothing like us,” says Darren. “We cater for all ages, from teenagers to men in their 60s & 70s.

We are very progressive without being too clever.”

Inside, there is a myriad of different styles to discover for all occasions - from smart shorts and classic tees, to jackets, shoes, trousers and jeans in a multitude of styles and cuts.

“We think about things a bit differently. People come to us to get kitted out from head to toe,” says Darren. “The direction we’ve moved in has proven to be the right one. We know what works and what doesn’t. A lot of guys out there need advice and we can tell them what suits them best - we’re well-known for that.”

With a range of brands on offer, customers can find timeless classics such as Fred Perry, Lee® and Levi’s®, combined with Premium contemporary labels Remus Uomo and Matinique, both exclusive to their store.

“Brands are very important. People have confidence in them. With heritage brands, you get clothes that aren’t going to date. You’re also buying into the history of it all. People won’t spend a lot of money for the sake of it, you have to offer a lot more,” says Darren.

“There’s a lot of nostalgia invested into the heritage brands. It’s about sharp styling and it’s a very clean look. For a while, the trends were getting smarter and smarter but there’s currently a more dressed-down trend coming in. So you see distressed jeans with suede boots. Clean looks are being mixed with casual looks.”

Known for their denim, the store has around 100 different cuts of jeans to help customers get exactly what they need.

The stock is diverse and Darren is keen to make sure there are new pieces coming in every week.

“There are two main seasons, but we have deliveries every week so there’s always something new on the line.”

As well as the shop in Norwich, J&B Menswear is also available online.

“We’ve been online for around three and a half years, taking our business worldwide,” he says. “As a business we work to a local level and we know what works well in Norwich and Norfolk. But at the same time, we’re buying stuff in that works on an international level.

“We have a lot of guys in Italy wearing our English Heritage brands, it’s a global market.”

Situated just a little out of the city centre, the store is perfectly placed for those who want a relaxed shopping experience, with room to park and the time and space to pick out different items and try them on.

“We get people from around Norfolk and Cambridgeshire come to us and they don’t always want to go into the city,” says Darren.

This spring, Darren says the store has a diverse selection of pieces to choose from including jackets, polo shirts, short-sleeved shirts, jeans and smart shorts.

“A lot of people want to get kitted out in spring. Easter is a busy time for us,” says Darren.

J&B Menswear started 50 years ago and Darren says being a family-run business brings many benefits to the store.

“We’re invested in the business both financially and emotionally. We love doing it, it’s not just about money, we really enjoy it and we get a lot of satisfaction from doing things our way which our customers like.

“We give people what they want – we offer different products with a personal service and the business just keeps growing and growing.”
