Highlights of history
Fifty fascinating stories from our past our brought back to life by writer Peter Sargent in his new book A Moment In Time. The snapshots in history focus on how national and international events affected ordinary people in East Anglia.
Peter goes in search of the craftsmen who created the beautifully painted saints on the Binham rood screen in the early 16th century only for others – perhaps their own relatives - to whitewash them within a generation. More of his 50 moments include troops training for D-Day in Thetford Forest, King Charles II riding a winner at Newmarket and a Green Man in Norwich Cathedral. Peter said: “When I was a child growing up in the Fenland area, I was told the wonderful stories of King John’s lost treasure, of Hereward the Wake, and Oliver Cromwell.”
He went on to work for the EDP and said: “A lot of the articles grew out of ideas I got from the news while I was working on the paper.”
A Moment In Time by Peter Sargent, illustrated by Annette Hudson and published by Paul Dickson, costs £12, and is available from Jarrold, Book Hive and Waterstones in Norwich, and the Aldeburgh Bookshop, as well as Norfolk Tourist Information Centres.
