Bishop & Miller draws interest with new Decorative Art & Design Sale
On Saturday 22nd September we’re holding our first specialist Decorative Art and Design Sale at our HQ in Stowmarket. Creating this Sale has been a long time in the making, as we have collected some exquisite pieces over the last year our wonderful clients and we’re really proud of the selection of paintings, prints, sketches and much more that we have gathered so far.
We’re thrilled to be selling a pencil sketch which is signed and dated by the world-renowned artist Laurence Stephen Lowry RBA RA (1887-1976). This lot has gained a lot of interest and we estimate it will fetch in the region of £8,000- £12,000 on the day of the auction. Lowry is most famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial areas of the North of England in the mid-20th century and his distinctive style is instantly recognisable, as well as his use of “matchstick men.” This sketch is really lovely piece, and it will make a superb addition to any collection.
A few pieces which I’m also excited about have strong local links to East Anglia. We’re selling three works of art by the talented John Piper. John Piper (19031992) was one of the leading modern British artists of the 20th century and he had a real passion for ecclesiastical architecture, including abbeys, churches, houses and castles. Piper had strong associations with East Anglia and Aldeburgh in general, where a fond friendship with Benjamin Britten led him to design almost all of Britten’s stage works. One of the lots in our specialist Decorative Art and Design Sale is Piper’s “Corton Church Suffolk” which is a limited edition print, signed by Piper and numbered 31 of 75, its estimate is £700-£900.
With links a little further from our East Anglian shores, we have a stunning painting by the well-known and highly-praised Australian artist, Sir Sidney Robert Nolan (1917 – 1992) called “Ayers Rock.” This painting has great provenance which is always an extra bonus in auction world! This painting was given to us through family decent and on the back of the painting it’s signed by Nolan: “Jack & Joe love from Sidney & Cynthia Christmas 1972.” I think this painting could fetch in the region of £1,000-£1,500 on the day. Nolan has a bold and striking style and his painting is set to add lots of colour to our auction!
With such a breadth of interesting lots I am sure you’re as excited as me for auction day. If you think you have something that you wish to consign to Sale or if you would like to come along to auction, visit our website for all the details: www.bishopandmillerauctions.co.uk
