Tulips can be planted out now; put a marker in when planting to avoid digging them up by mistake.
Soft fruit bushes such as gooseberries and red and white currants can be pruned now. Prune to an outward-facing shoot to keep the middle of the bush open, avoid overcrowding and crossing branches.
Don’t always be too keen to tidy plants for the winter; many seed heads including echinops, sedums, teasels and miscanthus have winter interest and provide food and hibernation spots for beneficial insects.
