Keith Clouting’s invaluable advice

Saxifraga fortune ‘Black Ruby’

This beautiful little herbaceous woodland perennial forms a compact clump of shiny, almost black, dark purple foliage which in autumn is topped by loose panicles of bright rich pink flowers, adding a splash of colour to a shady border or container. Saxifraga fortunei are fully hardy, and grow best in moist well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter. Plant in shade or part shade in a sheltered spot where the flowers can be enjoyed for as long as possible before being frosted back in winter.
