A work of art
Building up the layers of any room design is essential, according to Paula Gundry, whose design studio and store are located in the heart of Norwich city centre
Artwork can be incredibly personal, and often plays a key role in the homes of Paula Gundry’s clients. “It’s like the mascara and lipstick of any room - it can bring an interior to life,” says Paula.
“Some clients have artwork which they love and we offer guidance as to how we can develop a room taking inspiration from the colours within the art. Other design schemes may have developed through the use of textures rather than colour, and are more subtle, in this instance we work with clients to get the mix of colour and texture just right.
“It’s at the point of concept and development where we can specify the type of decorative art that will best reflect the mood of the room, and indeed the personality of our clients.”
Paula can commission hand-painted artwork that is created individually by artists based in the UK. Everything from size and depth of colour to framing and finishing is bespoke.
“We have recently displayed some pieces in our store and studio that have been inspired by the freedom of Bauhaus simplicity,” says Paula. “The stylised palette can contrast from thick Colman’s Mustard yellows to soft lichen - these contemporary artworks could be described as the punctuation marks of a room.”
There are many aspects to consider as an interior designer, and room layout is often where Paula and her team begin - how a room will flow and work is very important. The layers of detail - furniture, textiles, wall and floor coverings, lighting and decorative objects and artwork – are where a room becomes truly personalised to the client.
“The level of demand on our service has increased dramatically over recent years,” says Paula. “To keep offering the best service to our clients we’ve expanded our design team and researched many new and exciting companies, including decorative art, to add to our portfolio of products and services.
“We plan to re-launch our website over the next few months, so it’s a very exciting time for us and art will continue to play a big part in it.”
