PUT A BIT OF SPARKLE INTO MOTHER’S DAY
But don’t just to reach for the Prosecco – there are lots of alternatives
Mother’s Day is a cause for celebration, a time for a fine fizz or sparkling bottle. But rather than breaking out the prosecco or the Champagne, there’s much more to be discovered in Bakers & Larners’ fine wine department.
One example is South Africa’s Pongrácz Desiderius Brut. This Chardonnay and Pinot Noir Blend is hand-crafted using the Cap Classique method – the term used for wines from the Cape produced using the same traditional techniques as Champagne. Light, yet complex, with notes of fruit and almond it’s perfect for that special occasion.
Producing grapes from its Surrey vineyards is Greyfriars, a producer of fine English sparkling wines. Last year, having been awarded the prestigious IWSC Gold award for its 2014 Sparkling Rosé Reserve and the IWSC Gold Outstanding for its 2013 Blanc de Blancs, this particular English wine maker has been going from strength to strength since the establishment of its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards in 1989.
There is no escaping the popularity of gin in recent years. The months leading up to spring see a resurgence in the popularity of rosé gin, typically coloured by infusions such as strawberry, rhubarb or grapefruit and perfect with an accompanying mixer of your choice.
“When it comes to a wine or spirit gift for Mother’s Day, spectacle and celebration are the key criteria,” says the store’s fine wine department expert Patrick.
