Over the next decade, it is estimated that the amount of plastic waste produced by British consumers will rise by a fifth to over a million tonnes of extra waste per year. With this in mind, the Cookshop at Bakers & Larners has increased its emphasis on convenient ecofriendly products.

“We have been doing our bit for the environment on the shop floor for quite some time now. Our customers are increasingly aware of plastic waste and as a store, it is important to show that we are too,” says Cookshop manager Sharon Hayman.

A visit to the store reveals a host of new and innovative eco-friendly products. An alternative to cling film comes in the form of GoodToBee organic cotton beeswax wraps – 100%

plastic-free, reusable and an ideal way to keep food naturally fresh for longer. Also on trend for recycling products for a new purpose is a range of Hug Rug throws and cushions made from 100% recycled bottles.

“Our bestsellers have been Chilly’s reusable bottles that can keep drinks cold for up to 24 hours and warm for up to 12 hours. We have also begun stocking reusable bottles from Black+Blum, which have a natural charcoal filter to ensure water purity for up to six months,” Sharon adds.

“With many of these products, there is a degree of educating customers as to their use. However, the media has been a great source of pushing these products a lot more. When it comes to the environment, we have brought this problem upon ourselves and it is up to us to rectify it,” she says. Bakers & Larners Cookshop. Market Place, Holt.
