Seasonal advice from Keith Clouting

Calycanthus x raulstonii ‘Hartlage wine’

This ornamental medium to large deciduous multistemmed shrub from North America has aromatic bark and leaves and produces unusual burgundy-coloured flowers with a cream centre from late spring until late summer. The leaves then colour up to a butter yellow in autumn to give it a long season of interest. It’s a fully hardy shrub but does benefit from protection against cold drying winds; it will grow on most soils including chalk if plenty of organic matter is incorporated.
