As the sun goes down on a warm summer’s day, chilled-out beats fill the air and the sound of Ibiza takes party-goers into a night of dancing under the stars
August sees the return of Classic Ibiza at Blickling Hall – an event which has become a staple of the Norfolk summer, and thanks to its success, has now spread to different settings across the country.
“This is where it all began,” says Lisa Ward, director of Revival Productions which puts on the event.
“Four years ago, we were looking for a second night to add to our traditional British Proms event at Blickling; something completely different but that would work well at this magnificent venue. We had been on a family holiday and watched a similar concert at the Albert Hall online; it was a light bulb moment and we decided we had to look into it.
“When we got home my business partner Katharine Brindley and I started pulling the pieces together. We contacted the Urban Soul Orchestra (USO) with whom we had worked previously and knew they were fantastic
musicians, young, dynamic and had worked at the top of the UK music industry for 20 years. At our first meeting with them, there was instant excitement around the table, and we all had a feeling that we could be on to something special.”
They began pulling together the musical programme, and were thrilled when DJ Goldierocks agreed to get on board.
“The crowd had come to party and USO and Goldierocks performed with such energy that we really could have been in Ibiza; it was like an outdoor club experience where the dance anthems of the last 20 years got absolutely everyone dancing.”
The following morning, the team returned to the site to clear up and Lisa says both she and Katharine realised that they should take the show forward, such was the response.
“And so the decision was made to build on the success of the first event and take it to other venues across the country. To date, the Classic Ibiza show has been performed to over 60,000 people and has attracted a long-term partnership deal with Spanish beer giant San Miguel.”
Stephen Hussey, founder of the USO, says “I always feel that performing at Blickling is like a homecoming for us. The first Blickling crowd were so receptive and gave us so much love onstage by singing along, cheering us on and generally having an amazing time that it turned out to be a brilliant night.”
Over the winter, Lisa and her team work on finding new tracks to add to the classics and this year there will be 11 new arrangements, as well as the accompanying laser show lighting up the night sky.
Concert-goers can bring their own picnics or can take advantage of numerous stalls selling street-food and refreshments and car-parking is free.
The event, on August 9, starts at 6pm. Tickets and information, classicibiza.co.uk or 01283 841601
