Recharge the batteries
Are you sick and tired of feeling sick and tired all the time? Best-selling author, and mind and body expert, Susan Scott wants to energise you
Lazy summer days are one thing, but if your energy levels just about enable you to reach the sofa, then maybe it’s time to re-evaluate the way you treat your mind and body. With her third book, Life Force, now out, Susan Scott may just be the inspiration you need.
We recharge our phones, put petrol in our car, but forget about boosting our own energy. Why do you think this is? There are a number of reasons why, but the two main ones are a) we have very little self-awareness because we fail to spend time in reflection, and b) this crazy busy world we live in with all the pressures it creates means we’re just too stressed to think about ourselves.
You are passionate about looking after the mind and body. Why is it important that we focus on them in tandem? They’re connected! Our mind is a part of our body, and our body, and in particular our gut, has a huge impact on our mind. This is because it is a second brain and there’s a continuous information exchange going on between them, even while we sleep. This connection affects how we feel, what we think, our emotions and moods, what we eat, how we socialise and how we make decisions. But what is of most importance to understand is that you cannot improve the health of one without the other.
You take a three pronged approach – eat, drink and think. Why is this? Both because I am a nutritionist and a psychologist, and because the average human body is around 60% water and therefore works much more efficiently when it’s hydrated. I do believe in a more holistic approach to health and wellbeing that encompasses every aspect of our being and Life Force reflects this. This means I also consider sleep, movement, having a sense of purpose, managing stress and connecting with people in the book.
It’s all very well saying we need to improve our approach to energy, but many of us don’t have time...
It doesn’t require time, it requires a way of life. By building healthy habits into your life you lay the foundations to optimise your energy. Add vegetables to your dinner plate, take the stairs rather than the lift, manage the triggers that cause you distress; simple changes can soon become the norm.
What you eat is key to how you feel
