All hail to winner of best-kept ale
Serving a good pint of beer is at the heart of a proper pub. Daniel Nixon, of The Norfolk Lurcher in Colton, knows a thing or two about that...
How did you feel when you heard your name being read out as the winner?
Shock and total surprise at first! I was completely taken aback and couldn’t quite believe it. We work hard and take a lot of pride in how our beer is kept and the quality it is served at, so to win an award like this really makes it all worthwhile.
What does winning the award mean for you and the team at The Norfolk Lurcher?
Winning this award really is the cherry on the cake. As I said, we put a lot of hard work into our beers so it is great seeing the team being recognised and serving our beer with pride and enthusiasm.
What are the key factors in keeping good beer?
We believe attention to detail is the main factor. We try and treat our beers with the same care and attention as our food products, focussing on quality, locality and freshness.
What can beer lovers expect from the Norfolk Lurcher in 2020?
We have a lot of great events and evenings planned for next year. Our amazingly popular Beer & Food Pairing Evenings will be back, in addition to our brilliant Oktoberfest. We’ve also got a few special evenings planned but I won’t say too much about those just yet!
There’s more to the pub than just great ales though, isn’t there?
Definitely! We are lucky enough to have fantastic chefs in our team creating excellent dishes for our restaurant. Our gardens and outside eating areas are just brilliant in summer as well.
Apart from Colton, of course, what’s your favourite bit of Norfolk?
Recently Norwich has turned into a real foodie city; it’s great to get out and have a good meal on the odd day off. The beaches are just amazing too. We think they rival anywhere in the country.
You’ve had a recent addition to the family – are you getting any time to relax?
Ha ha! Good one! My son is currently doing his best to keep me on my toes, I’m not sure I remember what a good night’s sleep is. But I do make sure I get cuddles whenever and wherever I can.
Woodforde’s Brewery sponsored the Beer Quality Award “The Norfolk Lurcher not only demonstrated a great passion and enthusiasm for beer, but their attention to detail and the way they managed the cellar left us in no doubt that beer quality was always top of the agenda. We as brewers, are confident that the product we sell is experienced as intended with these worthy winners.”
