PLANT OF THE MONTH
Camellia japonica ‘Volunteer’
This recently introduced, large-flowered Camellia produces its unusual bi-coloured blooms from January to March. It opens a soft pink with a lighter edge; the flower then deepens with age with the edge remaining light, making the two-tone effect more prominent. ‘Volunteer’ is a relatively compact Camellia growing to around 2.5m when fully grown; it prefers acid soil in a partial shaded position avoiding the early morning sun which could scorch the flowers. It also makes an excellent container specimen.
