Sal­lix gra­cilistyla ‘Mount Aso’ This early flow­er­ing Ja­panese pussy wil­low pro­duces its unique pink­ish-red catkins of around 2.5cm long be­fore the fo­liage emerges. As they age they ex­pand to 5cm long, turn­ing a silky grey be­fore cov­er­ing them­selves in pollen. Af­ter flow­er­ing the fo­liage emerges, an at­trac­tive blueish-grey with silky un­der­sides. ‘Mount Aso’ grows to around 1.8m high but is best cop­piced ev­ery three years or so to en­cour­age young growth which pro­duces the most flow­ers. It’s an un­fussy plant and will grow in most soils in sun or part shade.
