PLANT OF THE MONTH
Sallix gracilistyla ‘Mount Aso’ This early flowering Japanese pussy willow produces its unique pinkish-red catkins of around 2.5cm long before the foliage emerges. As they age they expand to 5cm long, turning a silky grey before covering themselves in pollen. After flowering the foliage emerges, an attractive blueish-grey with silky undersides. ‘Mount Aso’ grows to around 1.8m high but is best coppiced every three years or so to encourage young growth which produces the most flowers. It’s an unfussy plant and will grow in most soils in sun or part shade.
