What’s the bestmultiroomsound system?

Multi-roomwireless speakers offer style and convenience, allowing you to replace assorted hi-fis and radios with one sleek system. You canmatch the number of speakers to the size of your home, and control themusic in each roomusing a smartphone or tablet.

Broadly speaking, there are two types of wireless speaker: Bluetooth and Wi-fi. Bluetooth speakers are best suited to a single room. They have a limited range (30 metres) and youmay find that yourmusic is interrupted by your phone ringing. Themain advantage of a Wi-fi system, such as Sonos, is that it allows you to simultaneously play different songs in every room that contains a speaker.

The Sonos systemis hugely popular because it delivers rich, room-filling sound and compatibilitywith 30 popular streaming services. It’s affordable, too. Start with an entry-level ‘PLAY:1’ speaker (£159) and add up to 31 more throughout your home. On the downside, if party guests want to connect their own phones to your Sonos, they have to download the app.

Competitors such as the Samsung ‘R-series’ (from £149) and Bose ‘Soundtouch’ system(from£170) don’t have that issue, as they have both Bluetooth andwi-fi connectivity. Neither can quite match the Sonos for sound quality, though.
