– for some, it may be a chore or something to be feared – but, in fact, the act of transforming one’s home with colour, pattern and texture is one that should be celebrated and embraced with passion. With advances in technology and new finishes, it’s now easier than ever to paint a wall, hang a panel of wallpaper or create curtains, giving you the freedom to change the appearance of where you live on a much more frequent basis. The only dilemma, then, is what to choose.

Every six months or so, textile manufacturers release a plethora of fabrics and wallpapers in an array of different finishes and colourways, paint companies announce new shades and tile brands add fresh collections to their ranges. It’s increasingly difficult to navigate the amount of choice out there. This is why my own home has a permanently changing patch of wall daubed with different test patches of paint; a couple of fabric and wallpaper samples pinned alongside. The eternal style conundrum of what goes with what is hard to solve, even surrounded, as I am, by all this inspiration day in and day out.

Fortunately though, our bi-annual decorating special is here, full of inspiration and ideas to assist you in making those tricky decorating decisions. We’ve curated the best fabric and wallpaper trends, throwing paints, upholstery and trims into the mix so that you can get a real sense of what your next scheme might look like. Whether you go for bold brights, subtle neutrals or full-on pattern, there really is something for everyone. After all, therein lies the true joy of decorating – it’s nothing if not democratic.
