Our new favourite website, bringing the joy of browsing flea markets to your living room
Rejoice, and then add Selency to your computer’s bookmarks. This beautifully curated French online marketplace sells gems from the country’s famous flea markets and antiques dealers, few of which previously had an online shop. ‘I was doing up my apartment, and wanted to break away from the Ikea uniformity that seemed to have flooded my generation’s homes,’ says the website’s co-founder, Paris-based businesswoman and interiors enthusiast Charlotte Cadé. Digital marketplace-wise, there was nothing between Ebay (some rubies, a lot of rubble and erratic post and packaging policies) and 1st Dibs ( glorious goods, but with premium price tags).
‘I wanted one website, where you can buy or sell vintage pieces – from a variety of eras, at a range of prices – that all look and feel modern,’ adds Cadé. ‘Oh, and which offers a uniform, fair shipping service.’ Selency was born. Cadé approached local stallholders, who rapidly signed up, eager to broaden their customer base to beyond their home towns. There are now 7,000 sellers and, as of this summer, they all ship to the UK. Every piece sold on the site has to be approved by the in-house moderation team first.
The criteria is simple: ‘Firstly, no matter how old, the piece has to be able to work within a contemporary interior. Secondly, the seller must supply a great shot of the product,’ she explains. Popular items so far include mid-century Danish sideboards, reclaimed industrial lighting and affordable ceramics. The bestselling pieces? ‘Rattan chairs,’ reveals Cadé. ‘From grand Peacock armchairs to Marcel Breuer’s modern classic for Gebrüder Thonet Vienna, the ‘Cesca B32’. At any given time, there are about 200 ‘B32s’ for sale on the site, most going for a fraction of what you’d spend elsewhere.
Overwhelmed by choice? There’s a personal shopping team to help, or you can hire Cadé herself to work with you on a professional project. Plus, there is even a complimentary ‘ Wanted’ service – if you can’t find what you’re looking for, enter the details and the team will do their best to source it (selency.co.uk).
