Our new favourite web­site, bring­ing the joy of brows­ing flea mar­kets to your liv­ing room

Re­joice, and then add Se­lency to your com­puter’s book­marks. This beau­ti­fully cu­rated French on­line mar­ket­place sells gems from the coun­try’s fa­mous flea mar­kets and an­tiques deal­ers, few of which pre­vi­ously had an on­line shop. ‘I was do­ing up my apart­ment, and wanted to break away from the Ikea uni­for­mity that seemed to have flooded my gen­er­a­tion’s homes,’ says the web­site’s co-founder, Paris-based busi­ness­woman and in­te­ri­ors en­thu­si­ast Char­lotte Cadé. Dig­i­tal mar­ket­place-wise, there was noth­ing be­tween Ebay (some ru­bies, a lot of rub­ble and er­ratic post and pack­ag­ing poli­cies) and 1st Dibs ( glo­ri­ous goods, but with premium price tags).

‘I wanted one web­site, where you can buy or sell vin­tage pieces – from a va­ri­ety of eras, at a range of prices – that all look and feel mod­ern,’ adds Cadé. ‘Oh, and which of­fers a uni­form, fair ship­ping ser­vice.’ Se­lency was born. Cadé ap­proached lo­cal stall­hold­ers, who rapidly signed up, ea­ger to broaden their cus­tomer base to be­yond their home towns. There are now 7,000 sell­ers and, as of this sum­mer, they all ship to the UK. Ev­ery piece sold on the site has to be ap­proved by the in-house mod­er­a­tion team first.

The cri­te­ria is sim­ple: ‘Firstly, no mat­ter how old, the piece has to be able to work within a con­tem­po­rary in­te­rior. Se­condly, the seller must sup­ply a great shot of the prod­uct,’ she ex­plains. Pop­u­lar items so far in­clude mid-cen­tury Dan­ish side­boards, re­claimed in­dus­trial light­ing and af­ford­able ceram­ics. The best­selling pieces? ‘Rat­tan chairs,’ re­veals Cadé. ‘From grand Pea­cock arm­chairs to Mar­cel Breuer’s mod­ern clas­sic for Ge­brüder Thonet Vi­enna, the ‘Cesca B32’. At any given time, there are about 200 ‘B32s’ for sale on the site, most go­ing for a frac­tion of what you’d spend else­where.
