Simplicity in the city Mediterranean meets Scandi style: what happens when a Danish interior designer revitalises a neglected Mallorcan apartment
When a Danish designer reimagines a dated Mallorcan apartment, the result is an appealing Mediterranean take on Scandinavian style
Amid Palma de Mallorca’s hot, buzzing Santa Catalina district, down a charmingly weathered boulevard of cobbles, tarmac and graffitied walls, stands a three-storey building painted rich red with grass green shutters. How exactly did Tine Kjeldsen,aDanishinteriordesignerwhosestyleandhomeware brand, Tine K Home, is synonymous with the whitewashed, Scandinavian style suited to cool cities in cold climates, find herself snapping up the first-floor apartment? ‘I was here visiting a client, when a Se Vende (For Sale) sign caught my eye,’ she says. ‘I decided I had to go and take a look at the flat, and fell for it on the spot – in spite of it being in a sorry state and needing some love.’ Several months later, Tine set to work transforming the neglected home into a pared-back pied-à-terre for her and her husband Jacob, as well as their three children – Klara, Tilde and Konrad.
Climb the narrow staircase that leads up to the threebedroom apartment and its worn stone stairs and original blue and white glazed wall tiles set the tone for Tine’s take on Mallorcan style. Inside, she has reconfigured the layout to suit her family’s needs, turning the large kitchen into a generous bedroom for her children. ‘With lovely restaurants all around, we don’t want to be cooking in the house much,’ she points out. ‘Instead, the kids have a huge space for themselves!’ Next door, she’s added a bright galley kitchen, perfect for making breakfasts and mixing aperitifs.
Decorating has been approached with a light touch and furnishings have been kept to a minimum. Tine’s aim was to encourage laid-back living, free from the trappings of the daily grind. Her carefully curated accessories include potted fig trees, beautifully bound interiors books and Danish tableware that draws inspiration from French and Asian craftsmanship. ‘My style is bohemian, combined with Nordic elements: simple and natural,’ explains Tine. ‘We love this way of living.’ tinekhome.com.
