NIGHT-TIME ELIXIR

-

CBD oil is one of this year’s biggest health trends. We find out more from Dr Julie Moltke, medical advisor to wellness firm The Drug Store.

What is it? Cannabidiol, or CBD, is an organic chemical compound found in either hemp or marijuana cannabis plants. The difference between the two is the amount of THC, known for its psychoactive properties, that they contain. Hemp has less than 0.2 per cent, while marijuana holds more. CBD can come from marijuana too, but it has the THC removed.

How does it work? It interacts with our endocannabinoid system (ECS) – our bodies have endocannabinoid receptors all over and it is part of our nervous system. The ECS controls functions such as mood, stress and sleep, and CBD interacts with it to affect these areas.

Can it improve sleep? Many insomniacs use it but it is not thought to be sedating; instead it calms the mind, allowing you to relax and sleep.

How is it taken? Most commonly as an oil, but it is available in capsules, vapes and creams, and it can be used in massage, sleep sprays

(try Oto’s ‘Pillow Mist’, £119) or added to food and drink. Start with an oil twice a day – try ‘AM Morning Tincture’ and ‘PM Evening Tincture’ by Yuyo Botanics (£39.99).

Are there any risks linked to CBD?

To date, there are no risks associated with taking CBD in standard doses. The World Health Organisation has stated that it is safe, with no addictive potential. If you have any doubts, consult your doctor.

Why is CBD such a big trend?

It is a strong anti-inflammatory, which can combat the effects of unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and high stress levels. CBD seems to be the bridge connecting herbal remedies with western medicine – the world is opening its eyes to all the potential benefits of this natural herb (thedrug.store).
