ABS OBJECTS
The Tel Aviv-based ceramics studio founded by Avi Ben Shoshan
How would you describe your work? All of the objects I design refer to the body and its shape. I like to think of them as living creatures – working with clay often feels like you’re working with a living thing – that have no gender; they can be both male and female.
What inspires the shapes you come up with? Archaeology and the human body. I always try to make objects that people can identify with. I want them to be timeless, as I think of them as eternal things that can live forever among other historical objects.
Tell us about your studio… It’s located in Tel Aviv in an office building-turned-atelier for local fashion designers and artists. It’s kind of like Alice in Wonderland; from the outside the building looks generic, but inside are beautiful and interesting spaces. The city has year-round sunlight, and that natural light nurtures and energises me.
What are you working on at the moment? A new group of objects – I don’t like to call it a collection.
I’m experimenting with creating ceramic furniture, which is a super-interesting idea to me. I am also working on a few collaborations with other artists and designers that I hope to launch towards the end of the year.
