GRAY TODAY
As another creative export from the Irish town of Wexford, it seems fitting that fashion designer and artist Richard Malone should spearhead a new exhibition celebrating modernist titan Eileen Gray. For ‘Making and Momentum: In Conversation with Eileen Gray’ – first staged in June in the French town of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin to tie in with the reopening of her seminal villa E-1027 nearby – he’s gathered a group of seven standout Irish makers, including ceramicist Sara Flynn and sculptor Niamh O’Malley. As much a showcase of contemporary Irish craftsmanship as it is a tribute, Malone et al present sculpture, textiles, ceramics, weaving and painting in response to Gray’s ‘legacy of spirited experimentation, dedication and commitment to her craft’. It travels to Dublin’s National Museum on 22 August, before arriving in Wexford for a homecoming next spring (makingandmomentum.com).
