Mid-century MAGIC
Fans of modernism will find much to love at Maido, a new sushi restaurant housed in a 1960s former post office in St Johns Wood. The second restaurant project from London creatives Child Studio, its cherry wood panelling and mid-century furniture are a far cry from the pink formica-clad pizzeria the duo designed in Chelsea, though both showcase the same knack for nostalgia. At Maido, that means a roll-call of design classics – clock the ‘MR10’ steel chairs by Mies van der Rohe and ‘Pipistrello’ table lamps by Gae Aulenti. Nods to Japan include aluminium stools by industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa, while a blue coffered ceiling that mirrors the grid of tiles below feels bold and playful (maidosushi.com).
