EXPERT ADVICE
French interior architect Pierre Yovanovitch on bringing balance and structure to small spaces
■ Creating distinct enclaves or vignettes is a great way to create comfort. You might situate furniture and artwork in a particular way to create an intimate section, or you could make a nook with built-in seating and a lower ceiling height (right).
■ There is a fine line between introducing artworks and design elements to make a space feel truly unique and overcrowding it. A rule of thumb I adhere to when working with a small space is using contemporary, neutral pieces to strike a balance.
■ The concept of cosiness involves evoking several of our senses, including sight, touch and sound. Selecting the right materiality – particularly natural materials that can absorb sound – is key in influencing the senses.
■ Use materials that are conducive to relaxation. Warm wood tones and natural fibres, such as oak and wool, offer a soft and inviting palette (pierreyovanovitch.com).
