INSIDE THE MEMPHIS REVIVAL
These colourful 1980s designs are more popular than ever
Last year, the iconic group founded
by Ettore Sottsass celebrated its 40th anniversary with an exhibition, ‘Memphis: 40 years of kitsch and
elegance’, at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. Fashion house Saint Laurent even launched a
capsule collection inspired by the bright, subversive furniture created by members including Nathalie Du Pasquier, Aldo Cibic, George Sowden and Michele De Lucchi. David Bowie and Karl Lagerfeld were well-known collectors, but it’s no surprise that a new generation has been lured by the movement’s aim to shake up the status quo. It’s as timely now as it was four decades ago; its lasting impact is unquestionable.
