INTO THE GROOVE

The enduring 1970s trend just got a fresh new update – courtesy of Habitat’s latest homeware drop

-

The 1970s are back – but did they ever really leave? It seems that, for many of us, a lust for sleek lines and earthy sunset hues has never truly waned, with demand for vintage furniture and accessories from the period still spiking several decades later.

That’s not to say that the wheel can’t be reinvented, however – as evidenced by Habitat’s frankly rather fabulous Summer Haze homeware collection. Breathing new life into classic looks, this edit is a joyful, contemporary take on the most in-demand designs of the decade, from flat-weave rugs and cheerful linens to sculpted side tables and bed frames.

The question of why 1970s style is so popular is one with multiple answers – perhaps it’s a longing for the laissez-faire lounge culture of times gone by or, perhaps more simply, few interiors movements since have manifested in a way that’s quite so creative, comforting and pleasing to the eye.

Whatever the motivation, we say long may this mood-lifting look continue. Here’s how to make an affordable 1970s statement in your own space this summer.

Throw some shapes

From geometric rugs (this one is £125) and framed prints to objets d’art, experimenting with hard lines and soft curves is all part of the fun of the retro aesthetic, so be brave. Juxtaposing textures is another way to lift the

look, such as the clash of the burnt orange crushed velvet of this Fenner three-seater sofa (£1,216) against the more vibrant fabric of the Kota armchair (£199) – both of which offer ample space to get creative with cushions.

Hit the sweet spot

Candy-striped bed linens in sugary colours, such as this soft bubblegum pink reversible duvet set (double, £20), are especially striking against

contrasting shades from the same section of the colour wheel – as demonstrated by this rich rust-hued upholstered headboard (bed, £350). Wood panelling channels the warm tones, natural fibres and texture

favoured in this decade. A metallic mushroom lamp adds charm.

Check it out

Chessboard chic is always appealing, especially when enhanced by the playful colour palette and pinched corners of these useful ‘catch-all’ trays (set of 2, £10). Display prominently on surfaces and shelves or atop stacks of your favourite coffee-table books, and use as storage for trinkets and jewellery

(or a designated home for your car keys).
