The hype... THE STATUS ICE CUBE
HOW FROZEN WATER BECAME THE UNLIKELIEST NEW FASHION ACCESSORY
With fans from Gigi Hadid to Louis Vuitton, Disco Cubes is the ‘part ice company, part art project’ created by DJ and photographer Leslie Kirchhoff, selling custom ice cubes (right) for up to – wait for it – $1O,7OO. ‘I pinpoint my ice obsession with seeing frozen fish trapped in a Wisconsin lake as a child,’ she says. From encased rosebuds to Playboy logos, Kirchhoff creates translucent architectural triumphs, a method honed during years of experimentation, turning tiny New York apartments and larger Los Angeles garages into laboratories. Now, rapidly growing orders – including floral cubes for director Gia Coppola and collaborations with brands from Moët & Chandon to Nike – have led her to a write a new cocktail book (out this spring). ‘I’ve created more than 1OO new recipes for Disco Cube Cocktails,’ Kirchhoff says of her innovative book. ‘Miso-butter-washed Suntory Whisky, combined with radish simple syrup and lemon is my favourite, but there’s an entire chapter on ice, of course.’
