As Japan’s capital girds its loins for the Summer Olympics, the worlds of art, music and fashion are going Tokyo-mad. The V&A presents Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk, featuring John Galliano’s kimono-inspired couture alongside punk interpretations by new Japanese designers. Next, rising Toyko-based collective Friday Night Plans sees frontwoman Masumi arrange laidback vocals over electronic soundscapes, eschewing the kitsch J-pop aesthetic. Their latest EP, Complex, will have you hooked. Meanwhile, on the fashion trail, designer Tomo Koizumi is shaking up Japanese design. Spotted by superstylist Katie Grand on Instagram last year, he made his New York Fashion Week debut just one week later and went on to dress Miley Cyrus. His aesthetic: large candy-coloured gowns and XXL ruffles, all with a gentle nod to traditional Japanese design.
