There’s more to Surrey than Hampton Court – this newly reopened hotel is the perfect base from which to explore

WHAT TO KNOW Tourists from all corners of the globe flock to the small suburban district of Molesey in Surrey, for a fix of British history, but there’s much more to discover here than just its legendary palace, Hampton Court. With a scattering of cafés, pubs and an impressive royal park to explore, it’s an ideal getaway for those wanting a relaxing retreat by the river, just half an hour on the train from London Waterloo station. WHERE TO STAY The Mitre This newly reopened hotel has brought life back into the area known locally as Hampton Court Village, giving us a new reason to visit. The Grade II listed property, which was originally built in 1665 to provide overspill accommodation for palace guests, has a prime spot on the riverbank, and combines city levels of luxury with out-of-town relaxation. The hotel’s playful look has been created by interior designer Nicola Harding, bringing the historic building bang up to date. Each of the 36 guest rooms has an individual look, some adorned with elaborate wallpaper, fourposter beds, quirky Ceraudo lampshades and magnificent copper bathtubs – there’s not a nook in the hotel that won’t find its way onto your phone’s camera roll. And you’d better be ready for some feasting during your stay. In charge of all things culinary is Ronnie Kimbugwe (ex-Claridge’s) who champions the best of British produce. There are two impressive restaurants: Coppernose is the all-day cafe and wine bar that offers up a side dish of panoramic views, while downstairs at 1665 – the hotel’s riverside brasserie, complete with alfresco terrace – the menu is stepped up a notch for dinner. Finish with a nightcap from the honesty bar in the super cosy, residents-only Minstrel Library and retreat to your room for a bubble bath before falling into a deep slumber. Because haven’t you heard? Staying in is the new going out. From £195 per night, breakfast included
