SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND: NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
WHERE TO STAY AND WHAT TO DO IN THE MOST FASHIONABLE CORNERS OF BRITAIN
Find all the comfort of the countryside with the cultural scene of a city in this often-overlooked English county
WHAT TO KNOW
It’s one of the most under-the-radar spots in England, and that’s exactly why Northamptonshire should be next on your wishlist. Pretty cream stone villages, ancient woodland, colourful meadows and majestic stately homes are just the start of what’s on offer. Northampton’s lively cultural quarter includes independent shops and gourmet restaurants. And, to top it all off, it’s only an hour from central London by train.
WHERE TO STAY The Falcon, Castle Ashby
With just 22 bedrooms, this restored coaching inn is the ideal spot for a few days of peaceful countryside escape. Curated with a calming, nature-inspired theme, the cocoon-like bedrooms are furnished with soft wool, ochre velvet, local wood and huge beds with crisp linens. Deep bathtubs, rainfall showers and generous bottles of LA-EVA products, all infused with essential oils, will help to soak away any fatigue. For a super-secluded option, opt for a stay in one of the hotel’s four private cottages. There, you’ll be softly woken by birdsong from the surrounding gardens or horses clip-clopping past. Early risers will enjoy the yoga classes, while outdoorsy types can go wild swimming in the private lake and everyone seems to love the afternoon gong bath and holistic massages. In the evening, guests gather in the fine dining restaurant Eyas, set in a charismatic corner building overlooking the gardens. With its nurturing, unpretentious feel, The Falcon is a pleasure to experience. Much of this is thanks to its dedicated owners, Lord and Lady Northampton, whose passion for wellness and nature permeates every aspect of the hotel. They also own the neighbouring Castle Ashby Estate, and welcome guests to explore its Capability Brown-designed gardens and lake. If you’re lucky, you might have the majestic grounds all to yourself, as we did: the ultimate treat. From £140 per night, B&B; wellbeing activities start from £35
