THREE DAYS IN... Lanzarote
Spend a long weekend on this colourful Canary Island – a volcanic paradise of black beaches, turquoise water and red earth
DAY 1
Check in to one of nine stunning rooms at Hotel Boutique Palacio Ico (inset), known for its legendary breakfast spread. In the heart of Teguise, Lanzarote’s former capital (before it moved to Arrecife in the 19th century), the hotel is the perfect base from which to explore the town – especially its huge Sunday market. End your day with a meal at laidback hangout Cantina Teguise.
THE HOT TICKET Teseguite
Local ceramicist Eguzkine Zerain (a former archaeologist) has a studio hidden down a winding street in nearby town Teseguite. There, you can watch her hard at work and also buy some unique pieces to take home, so make sure to leave space in your suitcase.
DAY 2
Timanfaya National Park’s otherworldly landscape is the result of volcanic eruptions from the 18th and 19th centuries. Take a tour through the Montañas del Fuego (mountains of fire) and feel as though you’re on Mars – grab a seat on the right-hand side of the bus for the best views. Then drive along the coast of Los Hervideros and make a detour to Playa de Montana Bermeja, where terracotta cliffs meet bright blue sea, before parking at El Golfo for sundowners.
DON’T MISS Playa Papagayo
Playa Papagayo (inset) is a hidden whitesand beach lapped by clear, calm water, thanks to the unique shape of the bay, and lined with chiringuitos serving cocktails.
DAY 3
Travel north to Jameos del Agua (left), where a huge crab sculpture welcomes visitors to the series of lava tubes formed around 4,000 years ago by the Montaña La Corona eruption. The site was converted into an attraction by artist and architect César Manrique in the 1960s and now has a bar, restaurant and auditorium. After lunch, it’s time for a walk like no other, right inside the crater of Volcán El Cuervo – just an easy 15-minute hike from the road.
THE PARTING SHOT El Charco
The grape-growing region of La Geria (inset) is on Volcán El Cuervo’s doorstep, so stop at one of the wineries before heading to dinner in the El Charco San Ginés area of Arrecife.
