IN RECENT YEARS, renewable energy has moved onto the developmental agenda in Kuwait, amid a need for a diversification of energy resources, climate change concerns and greater public awareness. Green energy development in Kuwait has also received impetus through the widespread availability of solar and wind resources and tumbling costs of alternative energy systems.
With increased potential in the renewable energy sector, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) along with the Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (KAPP) has launched a strategic sustainability initiative that seeks to generate 2,000MW of renewable energy by 203o. Kuwait recently also announced a plan to produce 15 percent of its total energy needs from renewable energy in the next 15 years, as part of a national strategy that will support its ongoing economic development initiatives.
