VISUAL DEVELOPMENT SUPERVISOR ANDY PARK TALKS US THROUGH THE NEW WASP SUIT

- BEN TRAVIS

THE HELMET

1.

Whether he’s atom-small or building-big, Ant-man isn’t exactly aerodynamic. Wasp, however, is more streamlined, with a slicker headset that comes in handy when she’s a) flying, and b) delivering agile smackdowns. “The Avengers costumes are more functional and realworld, more tactical,” says Park. “The Wasp is very comic book-y, paying homage to the actual insect. The way a wasp is designed, it’s the superhero of insects.”

THE WINGS

2.

Wasp doesn’t need a flying ant to get her around — she has her own wings. Designed to mimic real wasp wings, they’re another invention from Hank Pym, entrusted only to his daughter. “Pym Tech is always a little bit clunkier than Stark’s,” Park notes. “An example of that is that even when Wasp’s wings are closed, you can still see them. With Hank you can always see how the tech works.”

THE BLASTERS

3.

The blaster gauntlets can deliver ‘wasp stings’ to unsuspecting goons. “We explored different levels of blast, from a minorly annoying sting to a really powerful concussion blast,” Park reveals. “They also shoot Pym Particle discs that shrink and enlarge objects.”

THE COLOURS

4.

The Wasp suit was, fittingly, first glimpsed in Ant-man’s post-credits sting. But the final outfit has different hues. “The one in the end tag was fully digital because they never actually made the costume,” says Park. The finished suit is “gilver” (a colour between gold and silver), with a darker blue for contrast.
