How the oftentimes Norse God became a ’60s cult leader
1 Listened to the doors
__
“I was listening to a lot of The Doors — that sort of psychedelic [scene], heavily vivid music and drugs. I found that there was so much life and colour to dive into. I watched a lot of interviews with Jim Morrison and there was sort of an attitude there. Not like I’m saying he’s a cult leader. There’s just another layer, another aesthetic to pull from, particularly his mannerisms.”
2 studied real-life cult Leaders
__
“I looked at documentaries about cults and the incredibly manipulative nature of cult leaders, but also this sort of sick charisma. You start to listen to people talk and you see if you’re a little vulnerable and someone with that much charisma and belief says to you, “Here it is. Follow me,” and coupled with the right amount of drugs... You start to get a grasp on how these things happen.”
3 took calls with the director
__
“I got endless pages of imagery [from Drew] from that period. The hippie culture, the music scene, the freedom of expression... A lot of those images, there’s such a texture, you’re immediately transported to another world. We talked on the phone because I was in Australia so my prep was from a distance, but when I got to Vancouver, we got straight to it.”
