DIRECTOR Eli Roth

CAST Owen Vaccaro, Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Kyle Maclachlan

AFTER YEARS OF serving up torture porn, Eli Roth switches to something palatable for pre-teens, complete with magic, monsters and macabre puppets. Orphan boy Lewis (Vaccaro) moves in with his warlock uncle (Black), befriends the elegant witch next door (Blanchett) and tackles the mystery of a hidden, ticking doomsday device in his uncle’s house. The House... is built on practical foundations; aside from a few CG creatures, it has an appealing tangibility, while Roth rigorously orchestrates its chills and jump-scares. And while Black’s attempt to form a bantering double act with Blanchett doesn’t quite come off, it remains a solid creepshow.
