DIRECTOR Corin Hardy CAST Demiám Bichir, Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bioquet, Bonnie Aarons

THE FIFTH ENTRY in a franchise rooted in the Conjuring films. With each iteration, the claim of a factual basis gets thinner, and this is the most obviously made-up yet. An exorcist, Father Burke (Bichir), and trainee nun, Irene (Farmiga), are sent to a remote Romanian convent, which they soon come to believe is haunted by a demon. A paradox of franchise horror is that, after a while, it becomes comfortingly, even reassuringly familiar; this is sweetly scary, and not remotely disturbing. But director Corin Hardy delivers eerie images and nerve-scraping sound effects. Lapsed Catholics, in particular, will have nun nightmares after this.
