NARCOS: MEXICO
The drug cartel drama gets the mother of all reboots
FOR ITS impending fourth series, Narcos is undergoing such a transformation the show might be barely recogniseable, although current showrunner Eric Newman is still in charge. As indicated by the new title format complete with
Csi-style colon, out goes the ’90s Colombian setting and previous leads Boyd Holbrook and Pedro Pascal, and in comes a new central duo based in Mexico in the ’70s. Built round the rise of the real-life Guadalajara Cartel, Season 4 also functions as an origins story, showing how the ongoing drug war began. The narrative splits between its two main characters, played by Diego Luna and Michael Pena. Luna is the cartel leader, Félix Gallardo, who goes about the task of unifying disparate groups of traffickers to try to build an empire. Pena, meanwhile, plays undercover Drug Enforcement agent Kiki Camarena, who moves with his wife and young son from California to take on this dangerous new job in Mexico. Next up, Narcos: Essex?
