Riley founded hip hop group The Coup in 1991. It was typified by highly political lyrics and provocative album titles such as Kill My Landlord and Steal This Album. The group became notorious after the cover of their fourth album, Party Music, featured the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Center exploding. By unhappy coincidence, it was originally slated to be released weeks before 9/11.
