CHILDREN OF MEN

- JONATHAN PILE

Out 5 NOVEMBER / Cert 15 / 109 Mins

the uk government is desperately stockpiling medicine and a reality tv star roams the White House, but our reality is nothing compared to the world Alfonso Cuarón’s Children Of Men depicted. Set in 2027, 18 years into a worldwide infertility crisis, civilisation is failing. Clive Owen’s theo is a jaded former activist sparked into action when a pregnant woman, Kee (Clare-hope Ashitey) — perhaps the only pregnant woman on earth — is entrusted to his care. the scenes everyone talks about are the single-take tracking shots (and they’re right to — they rank among the greatest in cinema history), but they’re only one example of the mastery of technique with which Cuarón crafts his film. Infused with myriad references, from classical literature to religious texts to Pink Floyd album covers, Children Of Men is a film rich with imagery. But it’s also a cracking thriller.
