the cancellation of Brooklyn Nine-nine after Season 5 was greeted with such fan outrage that the police comedy was swiftly renewed by a different network — and rightly so. It began life as an Andy Samberg vehicle but become tv’s most reliable, big-hearted ensemble piece. Samberg’s Die Hard-obsessed Jake Peralta and the other detectives of the titular 99th precinct make only occasional digressions into casework between juggling the squad’s love lives, bickering over food obsessions and arguments over paperwork. Stand-outs include the over-enthusiastic Charles (Joe Lotruglio), super-capable Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero), family man terry (terry Crews) and the undeniable MVP, Captain raymond Holt (Andre Braugher), their intellectual, emotionally constipated leader. they have gone from stock characters to rounded individuals in five years, and their generally optimistic tone is desperately needed in these dark times.
