The hustle
director Chris Addison
cast Anne Hathaway, Rebel Wilson, Alex Sharp, Tim Blake Nelson
THE LIST OF ingredients for a successful con may still be somewhat mysterious, but there are glaring traps that The Hustle walks straight into. Comedian-turned-director Chris Addison’s feature film debut remakes the 1988 comedy Dirty Rotten Scoundrels by offering a gender-flipped version of the French Riviera heist. Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway deliver grating one-note performances, and the film’s broken feminism offers its only trace of likeability to a hapless male character. Jokes aren’t funny, villains aren’t vicious, lies aren’t believable and love is just fake. The Hustle buckles under the overbearing weight of its own vulgarity. Avoid the dirty rubble at all costs.
