DIRECTOR Floria Sigismondi CAST Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard, Brooklynn Prince, Karen Egan, Barbara Marten

A passion project of Steven Spielberg, who as producer saw one version collapse before hiring music video veteran Floria Sigismondi to wrangle a new attempt to screens, The Turning arrives with a legacy weighing it down. Namely, it has to compete with Jack Clayton’s acclaimed 1961 horror The Innocents, which also adapted Henry James’ novella The Turn Of The Screw. It’s effective, if not totally up to the job, while Mackenzie Davis, as a woman hired to tutor troubled youngster Brooklyn Prince in her scary, creaky house, makes for an appealing lead. Sigismondi and her team conjure plenty of spooky atmosphere, even if the attempts to keep the audience guessing lead to head-scratching in a way the filmmakers may not have desired.
