MY REMBRANDT

CAST Jan Six, Ernst van de Wetering, Duke of Buccleuch, Thomas S. Kaplan
What makes a masterpiece? Can money buy taste? Is expertise merely educated guesswork? These are just some of the questions posed by Oeke Hoogendijk in this twisting and disquieting insight into the class envy, intellectual snobbery and petty jingoism that underpin the art world. At the heart of the story is Jan Six, the aristocratic Dutch dealer who claims to have discovered two unknown Rembrandts. But sidebars involving Scottish dukes, American millionaires and the ramifications of a French tax bill touch on why governments, galleries and the super-rich compete for portraits that were commissioned as 17th-century status symbols. It’s not always an edifying spectacle, but it makes for compelling viewing nonetheless.
