NOBODY’S TOO A-LIST FOR SPONGEBOB

-

DAVID BOWIE

The late pop icon portrayed the Lord Royal Highness of Atlantis, a dolphin-like character whose brain exists in a glass dome atop his head, in an episode that first aired in 2007. “Art is what happens when you learn to dream!” Aladdin Sane himself tells Spongebob and Squidward. Sadly there was no tie-in track called ‘Sponge Oddity’.

JOHNNY DEPP

At the peak of his nautical powers (he’d just shot two back-to-back Pirates Of The Caribbean sequels), Depp cameoed as Jack Kahuna Laguna, a golden-skinned, bongoplaying surf guru who teaches Spongebob the way of the waves — in a 2009 episode that also featured Davy Jones.

JON HAMM

There was always something a little fishy about the advertising world sleaze Hamm played in AMC drama Mad Men. In Season 9, he took that fishiness to literal new extremes with parody character Don Grouper, a dorsal-finned smooth-talker who tries to con Mr Krabs during the launch of a new line of frozen crab patties.

J.K. SIMMONS

Spongebob parodied Whiplash in 2017, with help from Simmons, playing an irate, green-gilled band leader (sound familiar?). The episode plays out exactly like Damien Chazelle’s 2014 movie, if Chazelle’s film were a terrifying body horror in which Miles Teller’s body is inhabited by two sea creatures wreaking havoc on his internal organs.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON

The first Spongebob movie snagged Johansson for the role of Princess Mindy, the daughter of King Neptune and future queen of the sea. No wonder Patrick developed a crush on her, wooed in the film by her “mermaid magic”, which turns out to be completely fake. What would daddy Neptune say?
