Ian Freer: Much of the menace of ‘The Man’ comes from his ability to always be one step ahead of Rachel. This is never more evident than in the sequence in which Rachel calls her friend, divorce lawyer Andy (Jimmi Simpson), in a diner, only for ‘The Man’ to be sitting opposite him. As Andy hands the stranger the phone (“This is where the first lesson begins”), ‘The Man’ brutally beats Andy to death as their fellow diners do nothing. It’s an eruption of violence that is over as soon as it begins.
Derrick Borte: Jaws was a huge film for me. I know that a lot of people immediately think of Duel as a touchstone for this story, but I went to Jaws. I thought of Russell’s character as the shark in Jaws, in terms of the way that he just shows up and wreaks havoc and then vanishes. You don’t know when he’s going to show up again!
